At the moment licensing rights forbid record label artists from putting up full-length music videos on Facebook. But this is to end soon.
Facebook is all set to launch music video streaming on its platform from August 2020 in USA as a direct challenge to current giant YouTube.
It was reported by Bloomberg in December 2019, that Facebook is in discussion with Universal, Sony and Warner over the rights of music video publication in its platform. Previously all artists under contract with these major music labels in US were prohibited from sharing full-length music videos on Facebook. All they could share was a short clip of the video.
All that is set to change now. Everyone is US now will be able to see full music videos on Facebook.
As per a news report from TechCrunch (www.techcrunch.com) all music/artist page owners and admins have been informed about this. Only thing that needs to be done is to switch ‘on’ a toggle in the settings to add their music videos on or before August 1. After the set date Facebook will automatically create a page of the artists’ videos if no action had been taken.
The artists need not manually upload their videos or links. Facebook will control the page and by giving permission the artists can allow Facebook to add music videos on their Page to be easily discovered by fans under the video tab. Once enabled, the artists will have the right to remove the videos at any time and to edit the auto-generated posts, including the title, description, tags and thumbnails.
This new feature of Facebook poses a direct challenge to YouTube
With more than 2 billion monthly visitors and with more than 500 hours of video uploaded every minute YouTube dominates online free video worldwide. Most watched videos on YouTube are from super star artists and musicians.
YouTube has been the ‘to go’ place for all music lovers over many years now. Other than official videos this is also the place for mashup songs, best albums, and coolest covers. Facebook might not be able to take away this multi-level experience but will of course offer audiences with an option. And with many people checking their favorite artist’s Facebook page regularly, this feature, where they can also watch the whole music video will only be an added lure.
Adding music videos to Facebook Watch platform will add an extra appeal to Facebook as a video destination, whilst presenting music companies with a new online distributor and challenge YouTube’s supremacy.
